1. GENERAL NECK PAIN (Non-Specific Neck Pain)

Up to 70 percent of people will experience an episode of neck pain in their lives. In most cases the specific source of the pain cannot be determined even with an x-ray or MRI. Medical and rehab providers use the term non-specific to describe this condition.

More than 30 percent of individuals with non-specific neck pain will have ongoing or recurring symptoms after 12 months if the condition remains untreated.

Typical Signs & Symptoms:

  • Dull, achy pain in the back and/or sides of the neck, shoulder or upper back region.
  • Sudden sharp pain with certain movements, resulting in limited ranges of motion.
2. CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS (Arthritis)

Spondylosis, or arthritis of the neck, is common as we get older and in some cases will cause pain.

The discs in our spine dehydrate and lose height, applying more load to the facet joints that connect the vertebrae.

Increased load on the joints and bones can create arthritic changes, including little bone spurs (osteophytes). In some cases this results in neck stiffness and pain.

This is typically experienced when you are performing any activity that requires the neck to move through big ranges of motion.

Typical Signs & Symptoms:

  • General dull, achy pain and stiffness of the neck.
  • Grinding and popping when turning the head.
  • Pain at the extremities of neck motion.

The first stage is to get the pain under control. This means identifying and avoiding or modifying activities that aggravate it and implementing strategies, like soft issue mobilisation, that will improve your symptoms.

Restore Functional Mobility & Flexibility.

Restricted mobility is almost always a factor in neck pain. Restoring good functional movement is key to the process of releasing pain.

Muscle Activation & Movement Re-Patterning.

As pain diminishes and mobility is restored, the next step is to wake up the deep postural & stabilising muscles of the neck.

Build Lasting Resilience .

As your ‘pain free’ functional range is restored, the emphasis switches to increasing resistance to build the resilience needed to protect the neck for the longer term.
